Outreach hosted a Senior Academy sponsored by TRIAD of DeWitt County. What is a Senior Academy you ask? Senior Academy is informal seminars offering all kinds of information for the senior population. TRIAD is very concerned about Senior Safety and strives to do all it can to inform and provide information and help to seniors on all levels.
Topics discussed were Financial Scams, Elder Abuse, Victim Rights, Alzheimer’s, Home Safety, Crime Prevention, and Legal Issues for seniors. The presenters of each of these topics were experts in the field and offered lots of information and examples. Each session was ended with a question and answer period with some very good points brought up. Something we found out is that we all have had concerns and many had experienced some of the same things that were presented as examples. Especially in the scam session. This seems to be a growing problem for seniors all across the nation. We learned how to recognize possible scams and what to do if we think we are being scammed.
We learned possible warning signs of Alzheimer’s and the difference between Dementia and Alzheimer’s and how to talk to the doctor if we suspect someone has dementia or Alzheimer’s. We learned some basic home safety concerns and how to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of crime, not only in the home, but also when away from home.
One topic that was very valuable and we don’t like to think about was Power of Attorney for personal and healthcare, Living Wills, Trusts, and Estate Planning.
The academy was very well attended each session with an average attendance of 16. Each session was ended with a door prize drawing with prizes being offered by local businesses. Refreshments were donated by Farmer City Market and Outreach each session.
